In memory that this year is the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, I have posted 10 pictures taken there last May. This was one of many major battles during the First World War. There were almost 57,500 British casualties on the first day alone, on 1st July, 1916. The battle continued until mid November, during which time there were over 600,000 allied casualties and almost as many German casualties. The pictures were taken during a tour led by the well-published war historian, Taylor Downing.
